Professional Bio
While leading the athletics department's communications team, he helped Averett achieve new heights in developing memorable game day experiences. Wilson was instrumental in creating and curating AverettCougars.com, and grew Averett’s social media presence. He also played a large part in the development of the Cougars' streaming productions.
Wilson’s a member of CSC, serves on the Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest committee and judges for Creative & Digital Design Contest. He served a three-year term as a region rep for the D3SIDA board, and has been a panelist at the CSC convention and at programming for the NCAA Division III Emerging Elite program twice.
Throughout his career, Wilson has earned more than 40 accolades for writing, design and multimedia, including three national first-place awards for writing with two earning national story of the year runner-up distinction in the Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest. In 2025-26, he was named Averett’s Outstanding Staff Member of the Year and has twice receieved Averett’s Values in Action Awards.
A 2004 graduate of James Madison University, Wilson worked at the nationally award-winning student newspaper, The Breeze, for four years. He then worked at the Danville Register & Bee newspaper.
Outside of Averett, Wilson currently serves on the marketing committee of God's Storehouse, a non-profit food pantry. Wilson lives in Danville with his wife, Heather, and their daughters, Caroline and Annie.
