CoSIDA Membership Recognition Week Returns November 7-13
Third annual event celebrates SIDs and their impact within collegiate athletics.
by Will Roleson, CoSIDA Associate Executive Director
CoSIDA continues its efforts to celebrate athletics communications professionals and their impact within collegiate athletics with the third annual CoSIDA Membership Recognition Week this fall.
This year’s celebration moves to a mid-week start and will be held Wednesday, Nov. 7, through Tuesday, Nov. 13.
The purpose and goals of the weeklong acknowledgement are to show of appreciation for athletic communication and sports information directors, to showcase their efforts and accomplishments, and to bring positive recognition to them and to their work in promoting student-athletes and their institutions/conferences.
“CoSIDA Membership Recognition Week is designed to acknowledge and celebrate the important contributions that athletics communication staff members have on the landscape of college athletics and it’s served as a meaningful advocacy resource for our members,” said Doug Vance, CoSIDA’s executive director. “It’s a window of time in the athletic season when the spotlight shines on our profession and those talented individuals who work long and hard on behalf of student-athletes, coaches and their athletic departments.”
“For those external stakeholders who rely on a communication office for help, it’s a time to reach out and say thanks. And, it’s also an opportunity for those who interact internally with sports information directors to let them know how much they appreciate their support.”
This year’s celebration again will feature stories of CoSIDA members on CoSIDA.com/ThankYourSID; outreach to athletic departments, campus communications offices, conferences offices, related professional organizations and student-athletes; national media mentions; and a social media blitz again centered on the hashtag #ThankYourSID. A media/tool kit is available to educate those who connect with the sports information profession and provide ideas on ways to recognize and thank their athletics communications staff members.
“I am always excited for CoSIDA Membership Recognition Week because it’s a tremendous opportunity to acknowledge our talented, selfless and dedicated members for their contributions, leadership, hard work and impact on intercollegiate athletics,” said Rob Knox, associate director of media relations at Towson University and CoSIDA’s 2018-19 President. “The first two years were great and we had dynamite engagement from multiple constituencies across college athletics. Now, I'm looking forward to this year and building off of the success of what’s been already started.”
It is CoSIDA’s hope that those who benefit from SIDs’ efforts will take a moment during the week to thank athletics communications staff for all they do.
“CoSIDA Membership Recognition Week is an excellent time for institutions, athletic departments and conference offices to thank and acknowledge their sports information staff for all the tireless hard work and the selfless effort done behind-the-scenes to promote their entire athletic programs,” said Sam Atkinson, CoSIDA’s 2nd vice president and the associate athletic director for communications at Gallaudet University.
“It is the little things said and done that can show sports information staff members that they are appreciated,” added Atkinson. “CoSIDA’s goal for institutions and conferences, through this program, is to bring positive recognition to these individuals who many times go unnoticed."
