CoSIDA Board Minutes - Aug 2004
College Sports Information Directors of America
I. President Rod Commons (Washington State) discussed the CoSIDA website. He asked Past President Pete Moore (Syracuse) to head up a small committee to develop a list of items for the website - in order of priority. Director of On-Line Services Maxey Parrish (Waco, Texas), College Division Representative John Arenberg (Emory) and the chair of the CoSIDA Computer Committee will serve on the committee. He asked for a report back in the next few weeks.
II. Commons reminded all board members to send their bio and mug shot to Maxey Parrish for the CoSIDA website.
III. The board was made aware that long-time Wartburg SID Duane Schroeder had passed away during a trip to Europe.
IV. Commons reviewed Board liaision assignments again and said he was adding Arenberg to the the Computer Committee. Commons said the purpose of the liaisons was not to be involved in the regular business of the committees but to assist the committees if they have busines for the board or if the board has issues for them. Also to help keep the committees active.
V. Commons said the meeting in Philadelphia about the 2005 Workshop went well. He reviewed various ideas and suggestions that had been made. He said the local committee wanted to tie down a keynote speaker as soon as possible. Thoughts were expressed on a variety of issues, including a possible farewell party, moving awards banquet to a night where it would be better attended and having the Academic All-America Hall of Fame inductions at the Workshop. No action was taken.
VI. Academic All-America Committee Chairman Dick Lipe (Bentley) joined the call to discuss the proposals for on-line Academic All-America voting. Commons said a committee should be formed to review both proposals again and make a report back to the board ASAP. He said Lipe, Mark Beckenbach and Bernie Caffarelli of the Academic All-America Committee should serve on it, along with board members Nick Joos (Baylor), Joe Hernandez (Ball State) and Blake Timm (Pacific).
VII. Several issues were discussed about the process, including compliance verification, notification process and availability of personnel on the days the nominations are being accepted to deal with any issues that arise. The SportsSystems proposal would cost CoSIDA $10,000 and a $10,000 sponsorship for SportsSystems. The ICS proposal would be covered by the $20,000 sponsorship level under ICS current agreement. There could be costs in future years, estimated at $3,000 annually. Commons urged the committee and board to look at both proposals without regard for cost and select the one that would best serve CoSIDA and the Academic All-America process.
VIII. Director of Marketing Ed Carpenter (Boston University) had emailed copies of the proposed ESPN contract to sponsor the Academic All-America program for the board's review.
IX. Commons asked if the vice presidents had any reports that needed to be presented and there were none.
The call was adjourned.
