COSIDA BUSINESS MEETING
December 2, 2004

I. President Rod Commons (Washington State) reminded the board members who serve as liaisons for CoSIDA committees to check with their committee chairs to see that they are making progress with their goals and mission statements.

II. Commons asked about periodic distribution of academic team releases and other information through the CoSIDA blast email. Past President Pete Moore (Syracuse) said that Director of On-line Services Maxey Parrish had been sending out some periodic emails.

III. There was a question about Academic All-America coordinators checking to see if all nominees were submitted by members. College Division Representative Blake Timm (Pacific) said he checked his and said some other coordinators do but it is not an easy task. There was discussion that when the system goes on-line that will be taken care of - since all SIDs nominating must be a member or they will not have access to nominate.

IV. First Vice President Joe Hernandez (Ball State) said he was working on a conference call to test the Academic All-America process setup by ICS.

V. Hernandez said he was also working with the local committee in Philadelphia on the 2005 Workshop. He said Phil Martelli would be the kickoff speaker on Sunday evening. He plans a big promotion of it for the February Digest. .

VI. Second Vice President Doug Dull (Maryland) said he had sent a note to Ed Carpenter on potential sponsors. He said the NBA would be the sponsor for the Franklin Institute and ESPN would sponsor the Monday social function in Philadelphia. He said there was the possibility of a Sunday golf outing at Island Green Country Club with a shotgun start. He said he thought a $500 deposit would be required. Treasurer Dave Wohlhueter (Ithaca, N.Y.) said that would not be a problem. There was a requirement of a minimum of 50 golfers.

VII. Treasurer Dave Wohlhueter (Ithaca, N.Y.) said he was continuing to receive checks for job postings and that memberships were continuing to come in. He said he had filed CoSIDA’s IRS report with the lawyers in Kansas City.

VIII. Commons asked if the first payment had been received from ESPN and Wohlhueter said it had not but was supposed to be on the way.

IX. Secretary Jeff Hodges (North Alabama) said that the current membership was 1,786, and they are continuing to come in. He said he had received the article on ESPN’s sponsorship of the Academic All-America program becoming official and said it would be the lead story in the January Digest.

X. There was discussion about blast emails sent out that included a garbled attachment. Past President Pete Moore (Ithaca, N.Y.) said while Parrish or others can send blast emails directly, if they use attachments they must go through ICS contact Jeff Rubin. The attachments were initially sent with an Academic All-America email and the same attachment has been showing up on each subsequent email.

XI. Past President Tammy Boclair (Vanderbilt) said site selection for 2010 was coming along with seven cities already showing interest. She said she received information from Mary Flynn at Marriott on hotels in San Francisco, Hollywood, Anaheim, San Diego, Los Angeles, Palm Springs and Phoenix. She said the Site Selection Committee would be looking at dates, costs and local committee support to assist with hosting the event.

XII. Wohlhueter told Past President Alan Cannon (Texas A&M) that he had not received a contract from San Antonio and Cannon said he would follow-up on it.

XIII. Moore said the front page of the CoSIDA website needs to make more use of photos and the graphic capability that is now availble to us.

XIV. Moore said he would have information on nominating for CoSIDA Board positions in the February Digest.

XV. Boclair said she had been contacted by an organization looking for official abbreviations for every school in the U.S. for scoreboard postings. The board said there was no complete or official listing that anyone knows of.

XVI. At Large Representative Nick Joos (Baylor) said the NCAA has published the agenda for the January meetings and included is a proposal to restrict media guide pages to 200. At Large Representative Judy Willson (Sun Belt Conference) said the issue would be discussed in January and voted on in April. No one had seen any information on possible amendments of 232 or 248 pages. Commons said that in Calgary a task force was suggested to monitor legislation and offer suggestions. He said he would follow through and form the Task Force.
