Volunteer 15 is an initiative launched in 2014-15 to get College Sports Communicators members more involved in their communities. CSC members promote the great civic works done by their athletics teams but there is no promotion, or very little, about our members doing community service either with these teams or independently. CSC members are encouraged to volunteer at least 15 hours of community service each academic year, then submit your hours using the online form at CollegeSportsCommunicators.com/Volunteer15. CSC committee service hours from meetings and other activities can be submitted.

CSC members eclipse 13,000 #Volunteer15 hours for first time in 2022-23 academic year

That’s just what College Sports Communicators did for the ninth straight year, setting a new standard in the #Volunteer15 program with 13,630 hours throughout the 2022-23 academic year.

The program has set a record every year since its inception in 2014-15 and has totaled 75,651 hours of community service over the past nine years.

Participants continue to give back to their communities in diverse capacities including serving on committees and board positions, public servants, leading church production teams and nurseries, beautifying their neighborhoods and so much more. It comes as no surprise that participants found ways to incorporate sports by volunteering at local events, coaching and officiating youth leagues, and aiding media coordination for professional sporting events.

Another record established this year was the number of participants that logged over 200 hours with 18 individuals reaching the double-century mark. Those individuals are Greg Pellegrino (Penn State Abington), Dan Ruede (University of New Haven), Alisha Alexander (Lewis-Clark State College), Beau White (CSC Staff), Bryan Marshall (Millikin University), Bill Wagner (DePauw University), Ken Sweeten (Southern Connecticut State University), Josh Deer (Concordia-St. Paul), Paul Smith (Missouri Western State University), Judy Willson (Geneva College), Joe Matthews (Emory & Henry), Rob Carolla (Past President), Jay Stancil (Appalachian Athletic Conference), Ira Thor (New Jersey City University), Cindy Potter (Columbia College), Fred Baer (College of San Mateo/San Mateo County Community College District), Ed Haas (Collegiate Water Polo Association) and Blake Timm (Great Northwest Athletic Conference).

Additionally, Haas led all participants for the fifth straight year after tallying over 1,300 hours with the West Sadsbury Township Planning Commission. For the third straight year, NCAA Division III led the way with 40 participants.

Volunteer hours for the upcoming academic year can be accrued from July 1, 2023 through June 30, 2024. Members can log hours online at any time throughout the year at CollegeSportsCommunicators.com/Volunteer15.
