CoSIDA Member Child Scholarships (2, $1,000 each)

Application Deadline: All materials must be submitted on-line through the CoSIDA Scholarship Application system at CoSIDA.com by midnight Pacific Time, Thursday, April 27, 2017. No late applications will be accepted.

The CoSIDA Member Child Scholarship Program is designed to assist an outstanding undergraduate student who is the child of a CoSIDA member. Two undergraduate scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded for the 2017-18 academic year, with a limit of ONE CoSIDA scholarship per family per academic year.

CoSIDA Member Child Scholarships will be renewable (on a competitive basis) for up to four (4) academic years. However, award winners must continue to meet basic qualifications and re-apply each year.

Requirements

1. The scholarship applicant must be the son or daughter of a current, dedicated sports information (media relations/athletic communications) professional who has been a member of CoSIDA for a minimum of 10 years.
2. The applicant must carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for all high school OR college undergraduate work to date.
3. The applicant must be a high school graduate preparing to enter college in 2017-18 OR a current undergraduate college student who will be enrolled full-time in 2017-18.
4. The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (minimum of 12 credit hours per semester) for the 2017-18 academic year.
5. The most recent transcripts of all high school or college academic work must accompany application.

CoSIDA Fred Nuesch & Dave Wohlhueter Undergraduate Scholarships (2, $3,000 each)

Application Deadline: All materials must be submitted on-line through the CoSIDA Scholarship Application system at CoSIDA.com by midnight Pacific Time, Thursday, April 20, 2017. No late applications will be accepted.

The CoSIDA Undergraduate Scholarship Program consists of the Fred Nuesch Scholarship and the Dave Wohlhueter Scholarship. Nuesch, who spent the majority of his career at Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Wohlhueter, who is retired from Cornell, are both CoSIDA Hall of Famers. One complete application allows you to compete for both undergraduate scholarships. The scholarships, which are each worth $3,000 for the 2017-18 academic year, are designed to assist outstanding students in sports information (media relations/athletic communications) offices who have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in sports information and require financial assistance for their education.

Requirements

1. The applicant must carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for all undergraduate work to date.
2. The applicant must be classified as a junior or senior at their school for the 2017-18 year.
3. The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (minimum of 12 credit hours per semester) for the entire 2017-18 academic year.
4. The applicant must have an interest in pursuing a career in sports information (media relations/athletic communications).

CoSIDA Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant ($12,000)

Application Deadline: All materials must be submitted on-line through the CoSIDA Scholarship Application system at CoSIDA.com by midnight Pacific Time, Thursday, April 27, 2017. No late applications will be accepted.

The CoSIDA Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant Program is designed to assist member institution sports information (media relations/athletic communications) offices with funds to support the addition of a graduate internship. One CoSIDA Graduate Internship Grant will be awarded for the 2017-18 academic year, providing $12,000 for a 10-month appointment. Phil Langan was a CoSIDA Hall of Famer who worked at Ithaca, Princeton and Brown. He passed away in November of 2009. He served CoSIDA as secretary-treasurer and Digest editor from 1972 to 1977.

Requirements

1. The applicant (CoSIDA member sports information director) must submit this application form along with a one-page “Declaration of Need” outlining the personnel structure of his/her sports information (media relations/athletic communications) office, including the following information:  -- list of all paid athletic sports information employees (full-time, part-time, interns, graduate assistants, students) by position  -- number of varsity sports covered -- reasons for requesting consideration for this grant  -- any additional support information
2. The intern selected by the winning school must be a college graduate. It is the hiring SID’s responsibility to see that the intern meets this criteria.
3. The intern’s name, address and social security number must be provided, along with an affidavit from the supervising SID verifying the intern’s commitment to the SID office, prior to the beginning of the 10-month appointment. The $12,000 grant will be paid in two $6,000 installments, with the first sent approximately Sept. 15, 2017, and the second sent in January of 2018. A second affidavit must be submitted by the supervising SID to authorize the release of the final installment. Payment will be made directly to the individual hired by the SID office awarded the grant assistance.
4. An institution may receive a CoSIDA Phil Langan Internship Grant one time in any three-year period.
5. CoSIDA Phil Langan Internship Grants are available only to sports information offices without paid graduate interns. Applications must be complete and thorough to be considered.

CoSIDA Langston Rogers Postgraduate Scholarship ($7,500)

The CoSIDA Langston Rogers Postgraduate Scholarship, worth $7,500 for the 2017-18 academic year, is designed to assist a rising minority or female student working in sports information (media relations/athletic communications) offices who have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in sports information and require financial assistance for their education. Langston Rogers is a former CoSIDA President, Hall of Famer, Trailblazer Award and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient.

Applicants for the Langston Rogers Postgraduate Scholarship may also apply for the Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship, but must complete the separate on-line application process.

Requirements

1. The applicant must carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for all undergraduate (and graduate) academic work to date.
2. The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student (6 credit hours per semester) for the entire 2017-18 academic year.
3. The applicant must be a minority and/or female and have an interest in pursuing a career in sports information (media relations/athletic communications) and must be active in the sports information office at his/her graduate institution.

CoSIDA Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship ($7,500)

The CoSIDA Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship, worth $7,500 for the 2017-18 academic year, is designed to assist outstanding students in sports information (media relations/athletic communications) offices who have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in sports information and require financial assistance for their education. Wylie Smith is a former CoSIDA Scholarships Committee chairman and long-time Sports Information Director at Northern Arizona University.

Requirements

1. The applicant must carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for all undergraduate (and graduate) academic work to date.
2. The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student (6 credit hours per semester) for the entire 2017-18 academic year.

Scholarship Background and History

Annually, CoSIDA offers both undergraduate and graduate scholarships to deserving young professionals looking to begin a career in athletic communications, and also offers one annual graduate internship grant to a member institution to help fund a graduate internship position for the next academic year.

The first CoSIDA scholarships were awarded in 1981—and they were postgraduate scholarships. In 1999, the Scholarship program was expanded to include the undergraduate scholarships—named for CoSIDA Hall of Famers and former long-time CoSIDA secretary/digest editor Fred Nuesch and current treasurer Dave Wohlhueter—and the graduate internship grant.

In December of 2009, the graduate internship was renamed the Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant, in honor of the late Langan. At that time CoSIDA had named all but one of its scholarships for outstanding and worthy contributors to the SID profession. That changed in the summer of 2010 when the CoSIDA Board of Directors unanimously voted to rename the CoSIDA Postgraduate Scholarship the Langston Rogers Postgraduate Scholarshipin honor of CoSIDA Hall of Famer and Trailblazer Award winner Langston Rogers, who retired in 2010 after an illustrious career at Ole Miss.

During the 2013 CoSIDA Convention in Orlando, the Board of Directors approved a recommendation by the CoSIDA Scholarship Committee to endow a new scholarship for current CoSIDA members—the CoSIDA Member Child Scholarship. Funds for that scholarship began for the 2014-15 academic year.
