College Sports Information Directors of America

Annually, the CoSIDA Scholarship Program offers both undergraduate and graduate scholarships to deserving young professionals looking to begin or extend a career in athletic communications, and also offers one annual graduate internship grant to a member institution to help fund a graduate internship position for the next academic year.

• CoSIDA Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant ($10,000) - deadline April 5
• CoSIDA Langston Rogers Postgraduate Scholarship ($5,000) - deadline April 12
• CoSIDA Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship ($5,000) - deadline April 12

Below, Carli Todd talks about the importance of the CoSIDA Scholarship Program and the benefits she has received as a two-time scholarship recipient. As a University of Tampa undergraduate, Todd received a 2009 Fred Nuesch-Dave Wohlhueter Scholarship; she then earned the Wylie Smith Postgraduate scholarship and spent 2011-12 as a graduate assistant for DePaul Director of Athletics Communications Greg Greenwell.

In January of 2013, Todd was named Communications Coordinator for the MLB Tampa Bay Rays.

Here is her story and her career path with the help of CoSIDA scholarships.

I did not know what sports information was when I began attending the University of Tampa in the fall of 2007. Prior to college, I had a strong idea that I wanted to work in athletics media relations after an internship in the East Coast Hockey League, but I wasn’t sure how to continue down that path.

A month into my first semester—and after a visit to my class by UT’s sports information director, Tom Kolbe—I not only knew about athletic media relations, I also began facilitating it for the Spartans.

From game day operations to interview requests to scorekeeping, I was convinced that communication in sport was a natural fit for me.

After taking over as the main sports information contact for men’s soccer and baseball during my sophomore year, I found out about the scholarships offered by CoSIDA. Urged by Kolbe to pursue one, I applied and was subsequently awarded one of two 2009 CoSIDA Undergraduate Scholarships.

Needless to say, the award made my time at Tampa much easier. The $2,500 towards my books and tuition allowed me to forgo a portion of the student loans that I would have otherwise needed to borrow. It was, simply put, a relief.

Fast-forward to 2012. After a year of working as a graduate assistant under Greg Greenwell, the Director of Athletics Communication at DePaul, I once again applied for a CoSIDA award. When the organization informed me that I would be the 2012 recipient of the Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship, I was thrilled; Chicago is an expensive city!

Once again, I was able to take the scholarship in lieu of a student loan that I would later have to repay. The $5,000 I received from CoSIDA gave me a bit breathing room and allowed me to worry less about how I would pay rent and more about my studies and my work in the DePaul athletic department.

It’s hard to describe just how much the CoSIDA scholarships have benefited me, my education, and my career. I’m proud to be a member of this organization and I hope that one day I can help a future athletics communicator like I have been helped by CoSIDA.
