SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The second annual Play for Pat Award was awarded to Chris Wells of Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at the 2018 NAIA Women’s Volleyball National Championship.
Three years ago Pat Moore, who was the SID at Madonna (Mich.), passed away suddenly. Moore left a legacy behind that SIDs attending the NAIA Women’s Volleyball Championship remembers clearly to this day.
Moore was a friend to everyone and was known for greeting people with, “hello friend”. He was known for keeping the mood light when you needed it most, always made everyone laugh, his sarcastic comments, always ready to help out anyone, his crazy socks and his famous quotes.
Some of the quotes he is remembered for are, “Bad days are reserved for kids or adults fighting horrible diseases,” or “Sports are the toy department of human life,” and “You can pay for college but you can’t buy the school.”
Moore was a staple at the NAIA women’s volleyball championship for several years as he followed his team through the postseason. He helped anyone and everyone at the tournament that needed it and showed himself as a true servant leader.
“Patrick was such a big personality here at this tournament and we all loved to have him around,” said Corey Westra, NAIA Women’s Volleyball Championship co-tournament director and Great Plains Athletic Conference commissioner. “He embodied what the NAIA was all about with his passion and excitement for his work. Losing him three years ago was very tough, and honoring him each and every year now with the Play for Pat Award and with crazy sock day seems only fitting for one of the best SIDs I've ever known.”
In 2017, the Play for Pat award was created to honor him and what he represented. The SIDs/media and those that knew Patrick voted on the SIDs that are in attendance that best modeled those qualities and was always willing to help out another SID in need.
"The #PlayforPat award is something close to my heart and many SID's in the NAIA,” said Aaron Sagraves, Cornerstone (Mich.) SID and NAIA-SIDA President. “Patrick was one that had a major impact on many of us not only in the profession of sharing our student-athletes' stories but in our personal lives. The way he served people and put others first is something I try and strive for each day and this is exactly what the award embraces. He made sacrifices to help others do their jobs better."
Wells was announced as the winner after his team had won its final match in pool play and was able to celebrate with him.
“Pat embodied everything that is great about our profession,” said Potter. “Chris has spent the week helping out everyone, email photos, sending video, and many other things, all while covering his volleyball team and the other Lindsey Wilson teams in action without missing a beat.”
Pat Moore’s legacy will live on year after year at the NAIA Women’s Volleyball National Championship. This award has inspired the NAIA-SIDA board to honor other SIDs at other NAIA championships to inspire its members to come together, support each other and help each other get better.
