CSC will offer the following scholarship and grant opportunities for current dues-paying CSC members.

• Member-Child Scholarships (3 new recipients each year, renewable up to 4 total years - $1,000 per school year)
• Fred Nuesch Undergraduate Scholarship and Dave Wohlhueter Undergraduate Scholarship (2 new recipients each year - $2,000 per school year)
• Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grants (2 institutional winners per academic year - each at $17,500 per school year)
• Langston Rogers/Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship (1 new scholarship each year, worth $6,000)

The Member-Child Scholarship Program is designed to assist an outstanding undergraduate student who is the child of a College Sports Communicators member. Three undergraduate scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded each academic year, with a limit of ONE CSC scholarship per family per academic year.

The Member-Child Scholarships are automatically renewable for up to 4 academic years, with the requirement that award winners continue to meet the basic qualifications of the award.

Past recipients will be contacted by the Scholarships Committee to verify full-time enrollment and minimum GPA requirements.

Requirements

1. The scholarship applicant must be the child of a current, dedicated athletics communications professional who has been a member of College Sports Communicators for a minimum of 10 years.
2. The applicant must carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for all high school OR college undergraduate work to date.
3. The applicant must be a high school graduate preparing to enter college in 2026-27 OR be a current undergraduate college student who will be enrolled full-time in 2026-27.
4. The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (minimum of 12 credit hours per semester) for the 2026-27 academic year.
5. The most recent transcripts of all high school OR college academic work must accompany a completed application.

Past recipients of a Member-Child Scholarship do not have to re-apply for the award each year, as long as they have continuously met the original award requirements. They must verify (with transcripts) that they have continued to meet requirements when contacted by CSC to renew the awards annually and up to four academic years.

Past recipients of Member Child Scholarships who did not meet the requirements or did not re-apply based on previous scholarship procedures may re-apply to compete for one of the three new scholarships each academic year.

The College Sports Communicators Undergraduate Scholarship Program consists of the Fred Nuesch Scholarship and the Dave Wohlhueter Scholarship. Nuesch, who spent the majority of his career at Texas A&M-Kingsville, and Wohlhueter, who is retired from Cornell, are both College Sports Communicators Hall of Famers. One complete application allows you to compete for both undergraduate scholarships.

The scholarships are each worth $2,000 ($1,000 fall semester, $1,000 spring semester) and designed to assist outstanding students in athletics communications (media relations/athletic communications) offices who have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in athletics communications and require financial assistance for their education.

Requirements

1. The applicant must carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for all undergraduate work to date.
2. The applicant must be classified as a junior or senior at their school for the 2026-27 academic year.
3. The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (minimum of 12 credit hours per semester) for the entire 2026-27 academic year.
4. The applicant must have an interest in pursuing a career in athletics communications.

The undergraduate scholarships are not automatically renewable, but winning applicants as juniors do have the option to submit an application for their senior year.

(2 institutional winners per academic year - each at $17,500 per school year)

The Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant Program is designed to assist member institution athletics communications offices with funds to support the addition of a graduate internship. Phil Langan was a College Sports Communicators Hall of Famer who worked at Ithaca, Princeton and Brown. He passed away in November of 2009. He served CSC as secretary-treasurer and Digest editor from 1972 to 1977.

Two CSC Graduate Internship Grants will be awarded, providing $17,500 each for a 10-month appointment ($8,750 fall semester/$8,750 spring semester).

The winning schools do not have to designate the individual recipient of the award as part of the original application process. Prior to receiving the grant funds for the 2026-27 academic year, the school must designate the name of the individual recipient to CSC.

One complete application allows you to compete for both graduate internship grants.

Requirements

1. The applicant (current member) must submit an application form along with a one-page "Declaration of Need" outlining the personnel structure of his/her communications office, including the following information:
   • List of all paid athletic communications employees (full-time, part-time, interns, graduate assistants, students) by position
   • Number of varsity sports covered
   • Reasons for requesting consideration for this grant
   • Any additional support information
2. The interns selected by the winning schools must be college graduates. It is the hiring SID's responsibility to see that the intern meets this criteria.
3. Funds will be sent prior to each semester to the institution which will then pay the intern according to the school's payment protocols.
4. An institution may receive a Phil Langan Internship Grant one time in any three-year period.
5. Phil Langan Internship Grants are available only to athletics communications offices without paid graduate interns. Applications must be complete and thorough to be considered.

The Postgraduate Scholarship program consists of the Langston Rodgers/Wylie Smith Postgraduate Scholarship and the scholarship is worth $6,000 for the academic year.

The Scholarship is named in honor of former Scholarships Committee chairman and long-time Sports Information Director Wylie Smith at Northern Arizona University, and for Langston Rogers, former College Sports Communicators President, Hall of Famer, Mary Jo Haverbeck Trailblazer and Lifetime Achievement Award recipient who is the SID emeritus at Ole Miss.

The Postgraduate Scholarship is designed to assist outstanding aspiring graduate students in athletics communications offices who have expressed an interest in pursuing a career in athletics communications and require financial assistance for their postgraduate education.

Requirements

1. The applicant must carry a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 (on a 4.00 scale) for all undergraduate (and graduate) academic work to date.
2. The applicant must be enrolled as a full-time graduate student (6 credit hours per semester) for the entire 2026-27 academic year.
3. The applicant must have an interest in pursuing a career in athletics communications and must be active in the athletics communications office at his/her graduate institution.

Terms and Conditions

1. One Postgraduate Scholarship will be awarded for the 2026-27 academic year.
2. The scholarship will be allocated as follows: $3,000-September 2026; $3,000-January 2027.
3. Proof of full-time enrollment for a minimum of 6 hours each semester at the graduate school of the student's choice must be submitted before funds will be released.

CSC Scholarship Background and History

Annually, College Sports Communicators offers both undergraduate and graduate scholarships to deserving young professionals looking to begin a career in athletic communications, and also offers two annual graduate internship grants to member institutions to help fund a graduate internship position for the next academic year.

The first CSC scholarships were awarded in 1981 and they were postgraduate scholarships. In 1999, the Scholarship program was expanded to include the undergraduate scholarships, named for Hall of Famers and former long-time CSC secretary/digest editor Fred Nuesch and current treasurer Dave Wohlhueter, and the graduate internship grant.

In December of 2009, the graduate internship was renamed the Phil Langan Graduate Internship Grant, in honor of the late Langan. At that time CSC had named all but one of its scholarships for outstanding and worthy contributors to the athletics communications profession. That changed in the summer of 2010 when the Executive Board of Directors unanimously voted to rename the Postgraduate Scholarships for Langston Rogers and Wylie Smith (now one scholarship starting in 2025-26). This decision was to honor Hall of Famer and Trailblazer Award winner Rogers, who retired in 2010 after an illustrious career at Ole Miss, and for Smith, retired/long-time Sports Information Director at Northern Arizona University and former chair of the (CoSIDA) scholarship committee.

During the 2013 Convention in Orlando, the Board of Directors approved a recommendation by the Scholarship Committee to endow a new scholarship for current members-the Member-Child Scholarship. Funds for that scholarship began for the 2014-15 academic year.
