2012 CoSIDA Special Awards Salute

Malcolm Moran, Jake Wade Award recipient (outstanding contributions to media award)

Malcolm Moran, the award-winning and respected sports journalist, has been selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) as the 2012 winner of the Jake Wade Award. This award is presented annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution in the media to the field of intercollegiate athletics.

The award is named for Jake Wade, the widely acclaimed sports journalist and national magazine contributor for the Charlotte Observer and Sports Information Director at the University of North Carolina from 1946-62.

Moran will receive his award during the national CoSIDA Convention taking place at the Renaissance Grand Hotel in St. Louis (June 23-26). Moran will receive his honor during an awards luncheon on June 25.

Moran joins a long list of notable sports journalists in receiving this prestigious honor, which was first bestowed in 1958 to Bert McGrane of the Des Moines Register.

“Looking at that list is a humbling experience,” Moran said. “I see friends and colleagues, people whose work inspired me to become involved in the business, and some of the most influential names in the history of the industry. It is an honor to be among them.”

For the past six years, Moran has been the inaugural John S. and James L. Knight Chair in Sports Journalism and Society with the College of Communications at Penn State University. Moran’s role as director of the John Curley Center for Sports Journalism, the first of its kind when it was founded in 2003, calls for him to establish and maintain connections with professional sports journalism organizations across the nation.

In 2007, Moran was presented with the Curt Gowdy Print Media Award for outstanding lifetime coverage of basketball by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. He is a past president of the United States Basketball Writers Association and a member of its Hall of Fame. The Curley Center helps the USBWA organize “Full Court Press,” an annual seminar and scholarship competition for college students held during the NCAA Men’s Final Four.

Moran launched his daily newspaper career as a sports reporter at Newsday in 1977, where he covered high school, college and professional sports. He worked at The New York Times from 1979 to 1998 as a reporter and columnist before joining the Chicago Tribune in 1998. In 2000, he moved to USA Today where, in addition to his coverage of college basketball and football, he wrote feature articles on professional and college sports.

In his distinguished and diversified career as a sports journalist, Moran has covered 26 bowl games with national championship implications, 26 men’s basketball Final Fours, 16 World Series, 11 Super Bowls, several NCAA conventions and two Olympic Games.

Moran lives in State College, PA with his wife, Karla Hudecek, and their 15-year-old twins, T.J. and Katie.
