Volunteer 15 is an initiative launched in 2014-15 to get College Sports Communicators members more involved in their communities. CSC members promote the great civic works done by their athletics teams but there is no promotion, or very little, about our members doing community service either with these teams or independently. CSC members are encouraged to volunteer at least 15 hours of community service each academic year, then submit your hours using the online form at CollegeSportsCommunicators.com/Volunteer15. CSC committee service hours from meetings and other activities can be submitted.

Volunteer 15 Continues to Break Records in 10th Anniversary

College Sports Communicators celebrated the 10th anniversary of the #Volunteer15 program in record breaking fashion during the 2023-24 academic year, breaking four records including a new mark of 13,920 hours of community service among 162 participants.

With 89,571 hours accumulated over ten years, the 100,000 mark is on the horizon during year eleven.

Participants continue to give back to their communities in diverse capacities including serving on committees and board positions, public servants, leading church production teams and nurseries, beautifying their neighborhoods and so much more. It comes as no surprise that participants found ways to incorporate sports by volunteering at local events, coaching and officiating youth leagues, and aiding media coordination for professional sporting events.

Seventeen individuals logged over 200 hours throughout the year. Those individuals are Sam Atkinson (Gallaudet University), Lindsey Branch (Montana Western), Rob Carolla (Pro Volleyball Federation), Josh Deer (Concordia-St. Paul), Dom Donnelly (Tusculum University), Katie Gonzales (Illinois Wesleyan University), Ed Haas (Collegiate Water Polo Association), Travis Jarome (Jackson State), Joe Matthews (Emory & Henry), Eric McDowell (retired Past President), Patrick Murphy (Colorado School of Mines), Ali Paquette (Middlebury College), Greg Pellegrino (Penn State Abington), Cindy Potter (Columbia College), Jay Stancil (Appalachian Athletic Conference), Ira Thor (New Jersey City University) and Blake Timm (Pacific University).

For the sixth straight year, Haas led all participants with 1,590 hours. He continues to work with the West Sadsbury Township, Keystone Valley Fire District, and West Catholic High School.

The reign of NCAA Division III came to an end after they led the membership with participants for three straight years. NCAA Division I set their own record with 52 participants to lead the association.
