College Sports Information Directors of America

I. President Rod Commons (Washington State) said that Treasurer Dave Wohlhueter (Ithaca, N.Y.) was getting with Past Presidents Alan Cannon (Texas A&M) and Tammy Boclair (Vanderbilt) next week to discuss options on a possible Academic All-America Hall of Fame dinner at the 2005 CoSIDA Workshop. Commons said a decision needed to also be made regarding what Dick Enberg's role would be with the program.

II. Commons asked for reactions to a schedule for voting on the Academic All-America Hall of Fame that the board had received from Dick Lipe. He said it was a tight schedule but would allow for the voting to conclude in time for a 2005 induction. After discussion, the board agreed to tell Lipe to proceed full speed, but that the number of inductees may be limited to four, since there is no current sponsor or budget for the program. Two inductees will be carry-overs from 2004 and two more will be selected, as well as an Honorary inductee. Wohlhueter said that the dinner needs to be held in conjunction with the Philadelphia Workshop and the board agreed. Commons said he would call Lipe on behalf of the board and work out the final selection committee.

III. Commons asked for board reaction to a proposal from Katie Hyde to administer the Academic All-America program. The total cost of awards, expenses and compensation was $121,000. There was a lengthy discussion about the duties Hyde listed in the proposal. It was determined that some of the duties listed were currently being done by the program coordinators. Commons said he would work on a job description to continue discussions with Hyde.

IV. Director of On-Line Services Maxey Parrish (Waco, Texas) said ICS had determined why some members had not been receiving the blast emails and had made an adjustment. A new email had been sent and the board members said they had received it.

V. First Vice President Joe Hernandez (Ball State) said a conference call was set for 11 a.m. on Tuesday with Jeff Rubin of ICS to do another test of the Academic All-America nominating and voting process.

VI. Hernandez said he had also sent an updated outline of the Workshop program to the board for review.

VII. Second Vice President Doug Dull (Maryland) gave an update on the workshop social schedule. Director of Marketing Ed Carpenter (Boston Univ. ) said he had still not heard back from the NBA. There was also discussion of the golf outing in Philadelphia and Dull said the local committee was working on getting transportation.

The golf outing, which began as a function of the Charity Committee to raise money, no longer raises money for the charity committee and will be a function put together by the participants at their own expense.

VIII. Third Vice President Charles Bloom (Southeastern Conference) said the Special Awards Committee had a conference call. He said there had been numerous nominations but that the committee was expecting many more. He said there had been discussion on the call about the 25-Year Award and that CoSIDA membership would be taken into account but not required for the award. There was disagreement from several board members. It was pointed out that the CoSIDA Constitution states that the 25-Year Award be presented to "active members who have served 25 years as a full-time employee in the profession." Commons said a constitutional amendment would have to be proposed to change the criteria. Bloom was also asked to submit a final list of nominees to the board (for review and comment) before voting.

IX. Bloom gave an update on the proposed NCAA legislation limiting the number of pages in media guides to 200. He said the SEC's proposed amendment for 248 pages was in the final stages but didn't know when it would go before the Management Council.

X. Commons said he had talked to a member of the Management Council who said they would like input from the news media about the proposals. Commons said he would send Parrish a brief story asking for input and listing contact information for the members of the council.

XI. Wohlhueter said he had paid Millsport some of the money owed but said he was waiting for the breakdown from Boclair on Katie Hyde's miscellaneous expenses before paying anything else.

XII. Secretary Jeff Hodges said the February Digests were in the mail and he was collecting information for the March issue. He said he had also sent labels for the Winter Academic All-America programs to the District Coordinators. The call was adjourned.
