In our season opening volleyball match at home on Sept. 1 versus Indiana, I had something occur that I wasn't expecting. I was ready for my normal role of entering the statistics into our computer. However, it became apparent with about 15-20 minutes to go that one of the officials was not going to show up. We quickly determined that I was the only other person in the gym that was licensed to officiate volleyball at any level. (I've officiated high school volleyball for 14 years.) So, I quickly changed shirts so as not to stand out to the home-town crowd wearing an IUPUI shirt and worked the match as the down official, making my collegiate officiating debut.
